Why The Name?
We know you asked the question. And yeah, we know—"Otaku" can sometimes carry a pejorative connotation. For those who might not know, "Otaku" originated as a Japanese term to describe people with intense passion for their interests, often around anime, manga, or video games. Over time, it’s been reclaimed by fans worldwide as a badge of pride. For many of us who grew up embracing the label, "Otaku" reflects not just our fandom, but our community, creativity, and shared love for something extraordinary.
So why “The Otaku Choir”?
Because we’re reclaiming the term. In the same way that Otaku culture has redefined what’s cool and creative in the broader world, we’re creating a space where choral music can embrace the beautiful, emotional, and iconic soundtracks of anime, video games, and Asian pop music. These genres are often overlooked in the choral scene, but they hold a wealth of artistry and storytelling that deserves to be heard.
More importantly, we aim to go beyond the music. Historically, the contributions of AAPI artists and cultures have often been left out of traditional choral repertoire. Our mission is to change that—not just by singing this music, but by making it central to what we do. We’re here to celebrate it. To give it a place. To create a space where fans, singers, and fellow Otaku can come together and feel seen, heard, and inspired.
So yeah, we’re The Otaku Choir. And we’re proud to sing, gather, and uplift the music we love with the people who love it too. If you feel the same, welcome—you’ve found your place.
